LUC LAPENSEE RUNS HOME TO PLANTAGENET!!

With so many races being cancelled, our members are looking for new and creative ways to dream up personal challenges to keep them motivated to train. When all of Luc's marathons were cancelled, Luc got in touch and asked whether it would be possible for his personal training plan to include a 60km Ultra Marathon from Ottawa to Plantagenet.

Being his long time coach, I knew that Luc has what it takes to do a long run so of course, I agreed!! Luc keeps busy in his life as a branch manager at Lumen while also running the family Binerie business in Plantagenet. He thought why not add a little more fun to the mix and run home!

We developed a program that included long runs on both days of the weekend and eventually joined the two long runs together into one 60km long run! His training weeks also included some hill training and interval training to keep up his speed, and cycling and strength workouts. We also discussed hydration and nutrition plans to make sure that he would be adequately fuelled for the big day.

Here is Luc's Race Report:

"What a ‘’Race’’! This 60K Ultra Marathon was a crazy idea at first but a great replacement for the Niagara Falls marathon. I’ve been travelling Plantagenet-Ottawa for the last 51 years and what a better way to run it.

Training for an Ultra 60k is a little more demanding than a marathon but with Coach Julia's plan, I knew I was in good hands.

Race Day:
Perfect weather, 5c at the start to 11c at the finish line and overcast.
I was aiming to run under 6hours
First 20k I felt like a champion!
KM 20-30 I started to feel some body aches and started questioning my pace.
KM 30-40 – the bipolar phase, wanted to quit one km, and feeling great the next one. I pulled through as I knew that my buddy Alain Rodrigue was running the last 15k with me.
KM 40-55 – Cruise control, feeling ok knowing that I was going to be under the 6h goal!!
Last stretch… bringing it home, last 2km were my fastest, feeling great about the finish line
Finish Line: I was surprised by my family and friends… what a welcoming bunch!

Hydration/Food: Perfect recipe - Rekarb Gels, Banana, Protein Bars and lots of electrolyte/water. I had my camel pack on me for light hydration and everything else was in the escort vehicle.

Today Luc accomplished his 60km dream goal and ran from Ottawa to Casselman in a time of 5:54:31 with the support of his friends, family and his best running buddy Alain. He was met at the finish line by the sports team from Radio Canada. Once his interview is available we will be sure to post it on the Facebook page.

Congratulations Luc, we couldn't be happier and prouder of you!!
