VILNIUS SWIM MARATHON RACE REPORT 2025

Vilnius Swim Marathon Race Report 2025

Yesterday I participated in the 3km Vilnius Swim Marathon. This marks my fourth—and final—swim marathon here, as our posting will end next summer. The event itself offers a range of distances including 10k, 5k, 3k, and 1k, all set in the iconic and scenic Green Lake. For anyone seeking a unique destination swimming event, this marathon should be at the top of your list. The lake’s beauty is remarkable, and the organisation of the event is truly impressive.
I was honoured to finish second in my age group—go Canada! This result felt especially meaningful after a challenging year filled with multiple eye surgeries that repeatedly disrupted my training. Unsure of what to expect from myself, I began the race at a fast pace to break away from the pack, then settled into a Zone 3 effort.
On the return leg, I felt someone consistently drafting right behind me, constantly striking my feet. Rather than becoming frustrated, I remembered the encouragement of my dear friend and former swim coach, the late Mike Collingwood: “Jules, I know you have another gear. Kick harder, push the pace, and go!” Motivated by his words, I increased my effort to Zone 4/5 threshold, but couldn’t shake my persistent follower.
Instead of feeling upset, I found gratitude—in the swimmer who pushed me to go harder, in Mike’s timely advice echoing in my mind, and in the privilege of experiencing this incredible posting in Lithuania. The Vilnius Swim Marathon was not only a test of endurance but also a celebration of resilience, camaraderie with local and expat friends, and gratitude.
